Jesse Nusbaum is a sculptor best known for his bronze, realist animal sculptures. “I strive to replicate the actual subject,” explained the artist during a recent interview, “utilizing micro-detail encourages an intimate, close-up view.” Nusbaum’s commitment to fidelity is displayed in a unique technique he developed to highlight surface details. The resulting sculptures appear so lifelike that viewers have reported feeling like they have “experienced a face-to-face encounter with the actual animal.”

As an animal lover and athlete, Nusbaum has incorporated these two passions into his life and work. He enjoys being surrounded by animals, and his close interaction with and observation of them brings a unique sensitivity to his sculptures. As for his athleticism, the type of sculpting he does is very physical work. Some of his clay pieces weigh several hundred pounds before being fired. Nusbaum wrestled and played baseball (earning all-state recognition in High School and a Varsity starting position in college). The skills and strength he relied on then serve him well now to demonstrate his ability to focus, push for perfection, and persevere when facing challenges.

Nusbaum has a Studio Art degree from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in the tri-state area at venues including Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan, CT; Greenwich Art Society in Greenwich (2016 and 2017), CT; Mamaroneck Artist Guild in Mamaroneck, NY (2016 and 2017); Stamford Art Association in Stamford, CT; Martin Art Gallery in Allentown, PA; Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY; Ridgefield Artist Guild in Ridgefield, CT; Easton Arts Festival, Easton, CT; and online with Area Artist. His work is on view at the University of Connecticut, and in several private collections. In 2015, he was invited to have work featured in the prestigious Art Basel Miami. In addition to pursuing sculpture, he spends his time mentoring and teaching art to students in local schools. Nusbaum maintains a studio in his hometown of Weston, CT.
